Colour Range
Our company uses international NCS and TikkurilaCoatings (RAL, SYMPHONY) colour catalogues. For the past 8 years, OÜ Vikker Värv (http://vikkervarv.ee/) and Tempest AS(http://www.tempest.ee) have been our main partners.In 1952, Scandinavian Colour Institute (SCI), founded in 1946, published a catalogue with 600 colour shades and called it Natural Colour System (NCS).
Natural Color System is a logical colour notation system which builds on how the human being sees colour. It is based on the color opponency description of color vision, first proposed by German physiologist Ewald Hering. Being simple and concrete, it was generally recognized in the world.
The catalogue published in 1979 included 1412 color shades and was acknowledged to comply with the Swedish standards. Gradually, the catalogue was accepted as a standard in many European countries. The United states accepted it in 2000. The second edition of the catalogue in 1995 included 1750 colours, now the catalogue includes 1950 colour shades.
The Natural Color System is the only colour system that describes colours exactly as we see them, which is why it is easy to understand, logical and simple to use. Any of the millions of colours that exist can be defined within the NCS system and given a precise notation.
With NCS system, it is possible to judge the attributes of a colour by its notation. For example: how much blackness, how much chromaticness, and what hue? This helps to communicate and check specifications and to identify colours. The NCS notations describe the purely visual properties of the colour and have nothing at all to do with the mixing of pigments or reflection curves etc.
In 1927 the German Reichs ausschuß für Lieferbedingungen und Gütesicherung" (State Commission for Delivery Terms and Quality Assurance) invented a collection of 40 colors under the name of "RAL 840". Prior to that date manufacturers and customers had to exchange samples to describe a tint, whereas from then on they would rely on numbers. RAL CLASSIC colour catalogue is used to determine for varnish and powder coating colour shades. In spite of system drawbacks, the catalogue remains popular and is used by many companies including ours.
